Spain Advances EU-Aligned Crypto Tax Bill Despite Vox Party Opposition
Spain's lower house of parliament rejected a veto attempt by the Vox party, clearing the path for crypto-asset regulation aligning with EU's DAC8 directive. The legislation imposes stricter tax reporting requirements on digital asset service providers, both domestic and foreign.
The bill passed with 176 votes in favor, against 32 rejections and 136 abstentions. Finance Minister María Jesús Montero emphasized the measure's role in enhancing tax agency oversight capabilities and fulfilling Spain's EU fiscal transparency commitments.
Opposition parties criticized the legislation as a vehicle for unrelated political agendas, though proponents argue it will improve fraud detection and taxpayer compliance. The move signals Spain's accelerating regulatory harmonization with broader European crypto frameworks.
